The Last Days of Autumn: Zermatt at the End of November

I am fortunate enough to work for a company that deems it worthy to get all their employees to spend a couple days in the mountains each year – for team building, fondue consumption and outdoorsy activities (if you’re so inclined). Just like last year, we visited the famous ski resort of Zermatt at the end of November. In 2013, there was loads of snow at the exact same point in time – this year, we didn’t get so lucky, and the weather wasn’t particularly ideal either.

We still went for a beautiful hike around Täsch, a village 12 minutes from Zermatt by train. We started the “Panoramaweg“, a panoramic hiking trail overlooking the village, and then concluded it by choosing the “Rundweg” portion to go back – this is another trail a bit higher up in the beautiful larches woods.

The day we were leaving, there was time for a long walk through town, something I had actually not done the year before. If you can look past the touristy shops, it’s very beautiful, and we saw some nice buildings and old-school hotel signs. Even the Matterhorn showed up for a few minutes, before it retreated back into the clouds.

I’m looking forward to visiting the region more this winter, when there actually is snow. Any tips for winter hikes (with and without snowshoes) ?
